Maria Köpf

Maria Köpf (born May 14, 1962 in Munich ) is a German film producer , former managing director of the Filmförderung Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein (FFHSH) , and co-managing director of the German Film Academy since April 2019 .

Life

Maria Köpf grew up in Bavaria and initially completed a commercial apprenticeship. At the age of 21 she moved to Berlin . She studied American literature as well as film and theater studies in Berlin and New York . In 1992 she joined a group of cinema operators co-founded by Stefan Arndt , who directed and curated the Berlin arthouse cinema Sputnik .

Producer at X Films Creative Pool

From 1995 Maria Köpf worked in the team of X Films Creative Pool , one year after Stefan Arndt founded the production company with Tom Tykwer , Dani Levy and Wolfgang Becker . Her first job was as a production manager for Tykwer's feature film Winter Sleeper (1997). The second project was the world success Lola Run , which won the German Film Prize in 1999, among other things .

After that, Köpf supervised her other projects at X Films as a producer. In addition to the Tykwer films Der Krieger und die Kaiserin (2000) and Heaven (2002), this also included the 2001 Grimme Prize- winning debut film Paul Is Dead by director Hendrik Handloegten . Other successful productions were the 2002 for the German Film Award nominated youth drama How fired up by Connie Walther , and the 2004 Locarno was awarded the "Silver Leopard" feature debut En Garde by Ayse Polat .

From 2000 Köpf was also co-managing director of X Films Creative Pool , and kept this role until she left in May 2006.

Producer at Zentropa Berlin

In 2007 Maria Köpf became managing director of Zentropa Entertainments Berlin , a newly founded subsidiary of the Danish Zentropa production company owned by Lars von Trier and Peter Aalbæk Jensen . There Köpf was mainly responsible for international co-productions. Her first two projects were Mammut by Lukas Moodysson and Sturm by Hans-Christian Schmid , both of which premiered in 2009 in the Berlinale competition . This was later followed by co-productions such as Love Is All You Need (2012, directed by Susanne Bier ), or three Jussi Adler-Olsen films: Mercy (2013), Desecration (2014) and Redemption (2016). As an independent producer, Köpf was also responsible for the feature film Fenster zum Sommer (2011, director: Hendrik Handloegten ) and the television film Du bist dran (2013, director: Sylke Enders ).

Management of the Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein Film Fund

In January 2016, Maria Köpf succeeded Eva Hubert as managing director of the Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein Film Fund (FFHSH) . When announcing the order, the Hamburg Senator for Culture, Prof. Barbara Kisseler, emphasized Köpf's experience in film politics and her commitment to the "sophisticated cinema". In addition, the Schleswig-Holstein Minister of Culture Anke Spoorendonk highlighted Köpf's excellent Scandinavian film contacts.

During Köpf's tenure from 2016 to 2019, the FFHSH was involved in a number of large, international award-winning successful films, such as Toni Erdmann (Director: Maren Ade ), Out of Nowhere (Director: Fatih Akin ), and 3 Days in Quiberon (Director: Emily Atef ). In May 2018, Köpf announced that she would not extend her contract with the FFHSH, which ran until the end of March 2019. Senator for Culture Carsten Brosda regretted the decision and thanked Köpf for her “passionate commitment and good intuition”, which had further strengthened the importance of film in Hamburg and in the north.

Management of the German Film Academy

Maria Köpf has been co-managing director of the German Film Academy since April 2019 , together with Anne Leppin . With this, the management of the academy, after a long time in which Leppin filled the office alone, is returning to a dual leadership. Prior to that, Köpf was a board member of the German Film Academy from 2014 to 2016.

Further engagements

From 2009 to 2013 Köpf was a deputy member of the administrative board of the Filmförderungsanstalt (FFA) , where he was also a member of the guidelines commission. She was also a board member of the producers' alliance during the same period . As a result of her work as managing director of the FFHSH, Maria Köpf was also a member of the advisory board for the film course at the Hamburg Media School from 2016 to 2019 .
