Lists of aviation accidents

The Cameroon Airlines Flight 3701 (flight number UY3701 ) was a flight of Cameroon Airlines from the airport Cadjehoun in Cotonou , Benin , to airport Yaounde in Cameroon . On December 3, 1995, a serious incident occurred on this flight when a Boeing 737-2K9 with the aircraft registration TJ-CBE suffered an uncontrolled engine damage on approach and crashed. 71 of the 76 people on board were killed in the accident. Today (March 2019) it is the third most serious aircraft accident in Cameroon.

Airplane and occupants

The aircraft involved in the accident was a Boeing 737-2K9, which was 10 years and 4 months old at the time of the accident. The machine was assembled at the Boeing plant in Renton , Washington and made its maiden flight on August 14, 1985, before being delivered to Cameroon Airlines in the same month. The aircraft had the factory number 23386, it was the 1143. Boeing 737 from ongoing production. The machine was certified with the aircraft registration TJ-CBE and was given the name Nyong . The twin- engined narrow -body aircraft was equipped with two Pratt & Whitney JT8D-15A engines. At the time of the accident, the machine had completed 18,746 flight hours in 23,233 take-offs and landings.

There were 76 people on board, including a five-person crew and 71 passengers.

the accident

On that day, the machine was supposed to operate a flight from Cotonou Airport in Benin to Douala Airport in Cameroon. The machine started at 20:22 UTC. The flight should take about an hour. The machine flew at a cruising altitude of 33,000 feet (approx. 10,000 meters). The flight was initially without any special incidents. At 21:32 the machine was cleared to land on runway 30. After the pilots extended the landing gear on the approach to Douala, a control lamp indicated that it had not been extended. The pilots contacted air traffic control and Douala and informed them that they wanted to make a missed approach due to problems with the landing gear .

Minutes later, the pilots wanted to make another approach, but did not notice that engine no. 2 was running at full power while engine no. 1 was at a standstill. The air traffic controller was still watching the aircraft make a sharp left turn. The machine eventually crashed into a mangrove swamp. The Boeing was completely destroyed in the accident.

Of the 76 people on board, only two crew members and three passengers survived.

consequences

It was later determined that the left engine's compressor blade had broken due to material fatigue, which affected the flight path. The crew had initiated the go-around maneuver too late and did not realize that only one engine was available at the time. This led to a loss of speed and a stall, which ultimately led to a crash.
