occupation

En Garde is a German film drama by the German-Kurdish director Ayşe Polat from 2004. The film deals with loneliness, rejection and the search for friendship. The scope of action is the lives of young people in a community home . En Garde is named after a command from the sport of fencing , which asks the opponents to line up to fight - according to the TV station ZDF : "A metaphor for life in which it is important to parry attacks and attack yourself."

action

In the opening credits Alice is staged, who formulates an apology: I didn't want that.

16-year-old Alice is brought to a Catholic reformatory by her mother. She suffers from hypersensitive hearing - loud noises cause her torment. Her roommates Martha and Josefine harass and blackmail the introverted girl. Alice tries to behave inconspicuously and gets to know the fun-loving Kurdish girl Berivan, who is waiting in the home for the positive decision on her asylum application. Both sign up for fencing lessons. Your trainer comments: Fencing is like chess with weapons.

To avoid the stalking of Josefine and Martha, Alice Berivan steals a Walkman , which she notices. An argument ensues, but a friendship develops between the two girls. With a lit cigarette that Berivan left behind, Alice starts a room fire. She hides her act, but leaves Berivan in the dark as to whether this was the cause of the fire.

Eventually Berivan meets the boy Ilir through Alice and falls in love with him. Alice sees her friendship with Berivan in danger. The situation escalates when Alice reveals to Sister Clara that Berivan's asylum application is incorrect. During a discussion, Berivan knocks down Sister Clara, whereupon she dies of a head injury. Alice takes the blame, however.

Towards the end of the film, Berivan receives her residence permit and Alice is moved to another home. Berivan ends his friendship with Alice. In the final scene Alice comments: En Garde! and off. Sometimes you give in to the game and get lost in it. Then you forget yourself. You forget time and fear. These are the best moments .

background

The internet portal film.at explains, “The idea for the film came about through her [Note: Ayşe Polat] meeting with social orphans and refugee children in homes, youth housing groups and in a cultural center”.

The actress Maria Kwiatkowsky died in 2011 at the age of 26.

criticism

“Ayşe Polat's film En Garde is a German film that is surprising in a positive sense and certainly one of the best of this year. With young, excellent actors who master their sometimes very complex roles with flying colors and a lot of freshness, Polat succeeds in committed cinema without a raised index finger. "( Kino-zeit.de )

The internet portal critic.de sums up the film and the director Ayşe Polat: "With the help of the impressive actors you can create a credible social portrait."

According to verdi.de , “ En Garde is a dreary, oppressive film, which in a credible and virtuoso way draws a wide arc around a multitude of social problems”.

Awards

The production has received several international nominations and awards. In 2004 the film won the Silver Leopard at the Locarno Film Festival , as did the two leading actresses Maria Kwiatkowsky and Pinar Erincin. In 2005 En Garde was awarded the German Critics' Prize.
