The world premiere took place on October 4, 2014 at the Busan International Film Festival . The film was then shown at various international film festivals such as the Warsaw International Film Festival (European premiere ), the Edinburgh International Film Festival or the Shanghai International Film Festival . The German premiere took place at the Max Ophüls Preis film festival on January 21, 2015; the cinema release in Germany was July 9, 2015.

action

The film transfers Franz Kafka's story of the same name to a big city of the 21st century.

The main character is - unlike in the story - not an animal, but the office worker Franz, who moves with his wife and two children into a fortress-like residential complex, which corresponds to the badger's den in the story. An increasing need for security and quiet allows him to secure the apartment against intruders and imaginary enemies. He observes and reflects on his efforts in long monologues. His constant companion is a handheld camera. While his wife and the children leave him and he loses his job, the house that Franz describes as a building is falling into disrepair . The entire district and ultimately the entire city are neglected and deserted.

The film ends in a visually powerful post-apocalyptic world in which the homeless and exhausted Franz sees himself as an age-wise builder and - literally in the story - states: "But everything remained unchanged."

Reviews

When it came to criticism, the film was met with divided opinions. On the one hand, it was received as an oppressive, visually impressive end-time fantasy with subtle wit, which could appeal not only to literature fans, but also to cineastes. The acting performance of the main actor Axel Prahl is particularly emphasized . The great strength of the film lies in the visual implementation of the generally oppressive mood and Franz's increasing madness.

On the other hand, the absurd inner space of the literary original, its interlacing of inner and outer perception, upper and lower world, creatural instinct and delusional distress have to struggle with the concreteness of the visual in the film.

The interior of the building in particular developed an aesthetically appropriate effect for Kafka, but the dynamic of Franz's social decline is not one of Kafka's preferred themes. The futility of human existence, however, is a typical Kafka accessory. Here it will be enriched by a consistent continuation up to the apocalypse.

Right down to the supporting roles, the building is occupied by the German elite of actors. At the same time, the film adaptation is also a successful example of the fact that a film - like architecture - needs a perfect construction in order not to collapse like a house of cards. For this Freydank wrote a script that turns the animal into a person, moves Kafka's story into the 21st century and elicits a surprisingly topicality from it. "

- WDR3

“Freydank finds a middle ground between pictorial opulence and chamber play-like restraint. That is astonishing, because the as yet unadapted story The Building is even more difficult to film than the novels. "

- Psychology today

"The way Freydank films it looks spectacular"

- South German

“The film adaptation moves between psychological drama and science fiction film. She meets the unease about modernity with poetry reminiscent of the Russian filmmaker Andrei Tarkowski and the stylistic radicalism of German expressionists. "

- 3Sat

"A catchy and gripping metaphor for the loneliness and forlornness of modern people, in cool, claustrophobic images."

- Radio1

“Freydank films it as technically perfect as it is monotonous: gritty, streaky, with recurring lightning effects. But despite a few macabre-comical short appearances by Josef Hader as a caretaker or Devid Striesow as a craftsman, the 110-minute film is actually just a half-silent monologue by the protagonist Franz. Axel Prahl as the brother of Franz Kafka's Josef K .. "

- Tagesspiegel Online

“Kafka's story, which has remained fragmentary, is about an animal that wants to secure its structure for the future - and perishes of paranoia. Freydank has turned it into a highly topical, visually powerful parable. Here it is an employee who settles into his prosperity, but then out of fear that someone could destroy his prosperity, which does it all by itself. "

- Berliner Morgenpost

“Fortress Europe before it is stormed, that would certainly have been an all too cheap subject. But to break paranoid, as happened here, to take a look into the collective subconscious of the western affluent bourgeoisie and to come across a lot of fears and aggression, that is remarkable - as a diagnosis of the present as well as a Kafka film. "

- New Germany

“Anyone who only knows Axel Prahl from television thrillers should see the great actor in this film adaptation of a Kafka story. However, it has even more to offer than its fascinating main character, who is gripped by extensive paranoia. "
