Military career

In 1720 Petersdorff became a page with Queen Sophia Dorothea . In March of the following year he entered the Berlin cadet house and was then employed on November 7, 1724 as a private corporal in the “Graf Finckenstein” infantry regiment . There Petersdorff became an ensign in July 1728 and took part in the campaign on the Rhine in 1734/35, first as a second lieutenant and later as a prime lieutenant .

During the Silesian War he fought in Chotusitz , Hohenfriedberg , Soor , Kay and Zorndorf . His horse was shot in Jägersdorf and he was also hit by two bullets, which had already lost a lot of force. At Kunersdorf he was shot in the leg and arm. In 1743 he became a staff captain and in 1744 a captain . At the beginning of the Seven Years' War in 1756, Petersdorff became major and commanded a grenadier battalion, which was composed of the grenadier companies of the regiments "von Lehwald" and "von Below" .

In April 1759 Petersdorff rose to the command of the infantry regiment "von Lehwald". In 1761 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and after the end of the war to colonel in 1764 . Finally, Petersdorff was appointed chief of the infantry regiment "von Mosel" on January 19, 1768 and promoted in this position to major general on May 23, 1770 . In July 1774 his regiment moved into Bielefeld as a new garrison . In 1781 he had to hand over the regiment to Sylvius Ferdinand von Stwolinsky on the instructions of King Friedrich II and was to become the commandant of Kolberg . However, Petersdorff was unable to take up this command due to illness. Thereupon he was retired from service on August 10, 1781 and was promoted to lieutenant general with a pension of 1500 thalers.

He died unmarried in Minden two years later.
