Ich seh Ich seh is an Austrian film by Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala . It was produced by Ulrich Seidl . The English title is Goodnight Mommy . The film is about the phenomenon of Capgras Syndrome .

action

The film begins with a few shots showing ten-year-old twins Elias and Lukas playing in nature. During a diving competition in the lake, Elias calls out for Lukas several times, but he no longer seems to appear. After this prologue, the main story begins.

The mother of the children returns to her modern, lonely house after an extensive facial operation. The film, told from the children's point of view, offers the viewers only fragmentary indications of the context of the story: scraps of conversation and internet research by the twins reveal that the plot was preceded by a separation and an accident, that the house is for sale and the mother online -Dating has started.

For the boys, the heavily bandaged mother seems to have changed since their return. She ignores Lukas and asks Elias to do the same. Besides, she's suddenly very strict. The twins have increasing doubts that the woman in their house is actually their mother: At the game Who am I? she can't guess, suddenly she is no longer fond of animals and the twins find a picture that apparently shows the mother with a twin sister. The viewer also sees the mother pretending to be asleep and only having her face bandaged when she sees the twins coming home from playing.

An interplay of defiant, suspicious behavior on the part of the twins and increasingly aggressive punishments on the part of the mother begins. After the twins finally ask the mother to show her bandaged face, they are locked in the room. The next morning, however, the mother shows her apparently old face and offers the twins reconciliation. However, the twins' doubts are too advanced: They flee the house and seek help from the pastor in the village, who takes them back to their mother. When the pastor demands an explanation, the mother bursts into tears and says that it must have been the separation and the accident.

When the opportunity arises, the twins tie their mother to the bed. When two fundraisers from the Red Cross appear, they get rid of them. The mother begs angrily, then desperately to be untied, while the twins increasingly use violence to force her to reveal the whereabouts of their real mother. She answered the question about Lukas' favorite song incorrectly. They burn their face with a magnifying glass and temporarily glue their mouths shut with superglue. Elias gets scruples in the meantime, but Lukas convinces him to keep going.

The twins allow the mother to change the bed sheet that has meanwhile been soaked in. But she tries to escape, but falls over a wire stretched across the floor.

In the next scene the mother is glued to the living room floor. Elias gives her one last chance to prove that she is his mother: she should tell him what Luke, who is next to him, is doing. The mother's answer for the first time explicitly confirms what has been indicated by the behavior of the characters in the course of the film so far: During the entire film, Lukas does not speak to anyone except Elias. Only Elias can perceive Luke, who died before the main story began. Elias blames himself for Luke's death and is psychotic . All previous actions of the twins were initiated by Elias alone. Since the mother cannot see the imaginary Luke and consequently cannot give the answer Elias asked for, Elias lights the curtains. The mother burns.

The incoming fire brigade can no longer do anything. From a distance you can see a white figure walking past the fire engine on the left. However, this is not noticed by the firefighters. In the final scene, Elias and Lukas walk through a corn field. They are happily reunited with mother in a clearing.
