25 - The magazine

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

25 - The magazine is the title of a television program by the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF), which was broadcast on ORF 1 from October 2002 to October 2004 . Miriam Hie and Christoph Feurstein appeared as moderators .

The concept

As early as September 2002, the new format, which was supposed to be the evening magazine for young people, was presented to the public and advertised by ORF. The first program was broadcast on October 14, 2002, with the moderation on a weekly basis alternately between the then 30-year-old Christoph Feurstein and the then 24-year-old Miriam Hie . While Feurstein already had some experience in moderation, it was the first essential activity in front of the camera for Hie, who had previously worked as an editorial assistant to Oliver Auspitz at Streetlive or as a volunteer at Schöne Leben . In parallel to the broadcast, presenter Miriam Hie appeared as the host at a Starmania event in Vienna's P1 club at the side of voice coach Alexander Diepold every Friday until the Starmania finale on February 21, 2003 . Starmania was also a topic in the programs in many broadcasts.

The programs, which were held in live format, each lasted 25 minutes and were divided into four to five contributions on the topics of “Lifestyle, youth culture, stars, trends, backgrounds, curiosities and fates”. The program ran daily from Monday to Friday from 6:30 p.m. to 6:55 p.m. The ORF defined the group of twelve to 39 year olds as the main target group. In addition to current journalistic youth topics, major topics included internet news and technology trends or so-called revelation articles. At the beginning of each program, as was announced in the first press release on the program, a competition was held in the form of a “knowledge check from the field of popular science”. On Thursdays there was always a special section, the so-called Kinonews, in which current cinema films were the subject of the broadcast.

On the occasion of the European Year of People with Disabilities in 2003 , ORF initiated some innovations on this topic in its teletext and, as in the past, subtitled three daily news programs in addition to numerous programs, 25 - Das Magazin being one of them. In the first six months after the show started, the start was brought forward by five minutes to 6:25 p.m., meaning that the magazine only lasted until 6:50 p.m. At the initiative of the public council of the ORF, representing the interests of all ORF users, they were given the opportunity from the end of March to April 13, 2003 to make requests and suggestions about the content of the program and its design in an online survey.

In 2003, as part of the Supermodel of the World Contest 2003, the magazine was used as a broadcast space for extensive reports and reports about the life and chances of success of the prospective models. Up until this year, ORF had only advertised this competition in trailers . In the meantime, in 2003, the contributions were increased to six instead of the previous four or five. In 2003 the magazine was also part of the backstage tours in the ORF broadcasting center in Vienna . In the summer of 2003 the editors of 25 - Das Magazin presented a new section; In WG 25 , young, dynamic people were wanted for a shared apartment in Graz . After an application period and a casting that lasted several days, this section started on August 18, 2003. The magazine started with additional new sections on October 6, 2003 in autumn; a new topic was added every day. The equipment of the studio has also been revised and made more comfortable with new decorative elements and a sofa.

In the meantime, the start of the broadcast varied between 6:25 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. At the time, Isabella Henkel was responsible for the broadcast and editor-in-chief of 25 - Das Magazin . On the occasion of the road safety campaign in 2003 there was also a detailed report from the magazine. After switching to a pre-Christmas program in November 2003, 25 - Das Magazin started its own charity auction on November 26th for the benefit of Licht ins Dunkel . People were repeatedly cast for the programs to work as extras or in smaller roles. Among other things, a person who worked as a reporter was given a multi-day cruise on the AIDAcara through Southeast Asia . Norbert Schneider, who later became known primarily as a musician, once worked as an extra for 25 - Das Magazin . In addition, there were some segments with reference to the program name, such as the 25 - Advent calendar or the 25 - Pistenchecker .

From January 2004 the magazine worked on behalf of ORF in cooperation with the Public Employment Service (AMS) and the Austrian Chamber of Commerce and presented job profiles for young people in short spots. These spots were again created in cooperation with DoRo Production . In 2004 the program also had a focus on women. At the same time, 25 - Das Magazin was also devoted to EU expansion in 2004 . Other focal points this year were the 12th Life Ball , the Eurovision Song Contest 2004 in Istanbul , the Aerodrome music festival and the 2004 European Football Championship in Portugal . On May 13, 2004, the segment Gruber's Wondrous World with the physicist Werner Gruber was broadcast for the first time. In 2004, too, those responsible for the broadcast took up the concept of a TV shared apartment; From July 12th, Topmodel 25 - Die Model-WG was presented on ORF 1. In this eleven-part documentary soap, the life and everyday life of a model flat-share was presented.

Shortly before the program was finally stopped, the Starstyle category of the magazine made it into the annual New York Festival , the renowned international competition for TV programs, in the Young Adult Special category in December 2004 .

Audience ratings

The show, which was launched in October 2002 as one of three new formats by the ORF program directorate under the direction of Reinhard Scolik , had an average market share of 22 percent in the target group of 12 to 12 in December 2002 in terms of published ratings and market shares 29-year-olds, which was an increase of two percent compared to the market share of this slot before the magazine started. In June 2003, the program was counted among the program innovations and optimizations.

After 25 - Das Magazin had been considered the ORF's “construction site” for a long time, on October 1, 2004, the discontinuation of the program at the end of the year was publicly announced. Although the program recorded stable market shares in the target group of twelve to 29 year olds, the absolute number of viewers for the program slot was ultimately too low, although there were numerous adaptations. While the show still had an average of 184,000 viewers (aged twelve and over) in the first quarter of 2004, the range in the summer 2004, which was already a low rate, was only a little over 100,000 on some days. In May, Wolfgang Lorenz , ORF's head of planning, announced that it was apparently not possible to group the young people in a certain broadcasting slot.
