Ilan Mitchell-Smith (born June 29, 1969 in New York City ) is an American actor , ballet dancer and professor.

Life

Ilan Mitchell-Smith took ballet lessons for ten years. While performing at his ballet school, he was discovered by a director and screenwriter who asked him to audition for the film Daniel by Sidney Lumet, and Mitchell-Smith was given the role of young Daniel. In the same year the film was shown on US television. After several smaller TV appearances, he got a film role in the John Hughes fantasy comedy LISA - The Bright Madness , his most successful film in 1985 . In the same year he starred in an episode of The Equalizer (US series). The film flopped and didn't air until three years later. In The Chocolate War, a film directed by Keith Gordon, Mitchell-Smith played the role of Jerry Renault, a student at a Catholic high school who is rejected by his classmates. In 1989 he played the role of Andy McAllister in the television series Superboy . A return to show business failed as follow-up projects also flopped.

Mitchell-Smith studied medieval studies. He received his bachelor's degree from UC Davis and his master's degree in Medieval Studies from Fordham University . He was later a professor at Angelo State University . In 2005 he obtained his Ph.D. at Texas A&M University and subsequently became Associate Professor in the English department of California State University , Long Beach (CSULB). His research focuses on English-language medieval knight literature, Old and Middle English and the modern reception of the Middle Ages in film, television and computer games in the USA. Michael-Smith is now co-director of the Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies at CSULB.
