action

Thomas Hudetz works as a dispatcher for the Austrian Federal Railways in a small provincial town and has to set points and signals. One day Anna, who has just said goodbye to her fiancé Ferdinand at the train station, comes to Thomas in the guard's house. First, the two, who have known each other for a long time, have a short conversation, and finally they kiss. Distracted by this, Thomas forgets to close a railway barrier - with a fatal outcome.

An express train collides with Thomas' friend Joe's milk delivery truck and derails. 22 people are killed in this accident, including Joe. Although Thomas is acquitted in the ensuing trial, mainly because of the exonerating testimony of Anna, his life has turned out of joint. His wife Hanna, who observed the scene in the guard house, files for divorce. Finally Anna, who is also plagued by feelings of guilt, and Thomas begin a relationship. However, Anna cannot process the tragic event and commits suicide by throwing herself from a railway bridge in the presence of Thomas. Thomas Leben is then completely out of control. He drinks, takes pills, drives to Anna's father's hotel and accuses himself of murdering Anna. Then he drives to the railway bridge Anna dropped from and lies down on the rails. Anna's fiancé Ferdinand follows Thomas and wants to hold him accountable, knife in hand. He finds him lying unconscious on the track, but cannot wake him up. Ferdinand leaves Thomas lying there.
