action

In a Bohemian village, the farmer's daughter Marie is supposed to marry the wealthy but limited Wenzel, according to her parents 'wishes, but she loves the penniless Hans, who had been driven out of her parents' house by his stepmother. While Marie - unrecognized by him - tries to warn the stuttering Wenzel against marriage, the matchmaker has contractually agreed with Hans to waive Marie for 300 guilders, but on the condition that Marie is only one son of the farmer Micha - the father Wenceslas - allowed to marry. All those present are outraged about this "sale of the bride".

When a traveling circus came to the village a little later, Wenzel fell in love with the dancer Esmeralda and was persuaded to take part in the circus troupe disguised as a dancing bear. Marie confronts Hans for his apparent betrayal and threatens to agree to marry Wenzel. The situation is resolved when Wenzel's father recognizes his lost son from his first marriage in Hans and allows him to marry Marie. The person betrayed is the matchmaker who has to pay the contractually agreed 300 guilders without being able to claim the agency fee himself.

Reviews

FonoForum 12/07: “This recording is ennobled by the gorgeous and touching Lucia Popp, who serves every soul emotion of the emotionally thrown Marie in the most natural way of the singing world, both vocal and acting. Adam Fischer conducts the choir and orchestra of the Vienna State Opera with Slavic finesse, but also great, sometimes even sad delicacy. A wonderfully nostalgic affair. "
