Milena Canonero (born January 1, 1946 in Turin ; according to other information January 1, 1942 ) is an Italian costume designer . Canonero was nominated nine times for the Academy Award from 1975 to 2015 and won the award four times.

Life

Milena Canonero grew up in a French convent . She studied art history and costume design in Genoa and London . She gained her first practical experience at the side of Vittorio de Sica . She later also worked at the New York Metropolitan Opera . Milena Canonero designed numerous costumes for productions by Otto Schenk at the Salzburg Festival and at the Vienna State Opera , a. a. for Die Fledermaus (1979) and Andrea Chénier (1981). The opera singer Kiri Te Kanawa also wore Canonero creations in performances. At the end of the 1960s, Milena Canonera went to England, where she made contact with the film industry through the (then) short film director Hugh Hudson .

In London she met the director Stanley Kubrick , who hired her in 1970 for his film A Clockwork Orange . Four years later, Canonero again worked with Kubrick and designed together with Ulla-Britt Söderlund the 1976 with the Academy Award winning costumes for Barry Lyndon . In the 1980s, Canonero shaped the clothing style in the television series Miami Vice . In 2010 she designed the costumes for the new production of Puccini's opera Tosca at the Munich State Opera .

Canonero is married to actor Marshall Bell and lives in West Hollywood, California .

At the 67th Berlinale in 2017, the Homage section will be dedicated to Canonero and films such as Barry Lyndon , The Grand Budapest Hotel and The Godfather III will be shown. In addition, she was awarded the Honorary Golden Bear for her life's work.
