Hugh Hudson
Hugh Hudson (born August 25, 1936 in London , England ) is a British film director .
life and career
After completing his military service in 1962, Hudson learned the trade of film editor at a French production company specializing in documentary films . Back in England, he founded his own company and won awards with several films, including a 1967 nomination for the British Film Academy Award , Best Short Film , with the short film The Tortoise and the Hare. In 1970, he became a partner of Ridley Scott and shot numerous and award-winning commercials with him . From 1975 he successfully continued this work together with Alan Parker .
It wasn't until 1981 that he gave in to the urge to make a feature film . The hour of the winner ( Chariots of Fire ), a film about the participation of two British sprinters in the Olympic Games in Paris in 1924 , was the winner of the 1982 Oscar night and won four of the coveted trophies out of seven nominations , including one for “ Best Film ". For Hudson, the nomination for " Best Director " remained.
Another success followed in 1984 with the film Greystoke - The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes . The flick starred its leading actors Christopher Lambert and Andie MacDowell and received three Academy Award nominations.
Hudson's next project, Revolution (1985), a film about the American Revolutionary War starring Al Pacino and Nastassja Kinski , however, proved artistically and financially a failure.
1989 earned Hudson's next film, the teen - Drama Road Home ( Lost Angels ) positive reviews, but found little encouragement from the audience. The same was true in 1999 for My Life So Far, about a British childhood during the First World War . Hudson's last film so far was 2000 I Dreamed of Africa ( I Dreamed of Africa ) with Kim Basinger as a spoiled Italian who has to face the hardships of a life in the wilderness.
In 2015 he staged an opera for the first time at the Braunschweig State Theater with Witch Hunt based on the play of the same name by Arthur Miller .
Hugh Hudson has been married to actress Maryam d'Abo since 2003 .
