Eva Randová (born December 31, 1936 in Kolín ) is a Czech opera and chamber singer ( mezzo-soprano ).

Life

Eva Randová was a Czech swimming champion in her youth. She first became a teacher of sports and mathematics, then studied singing at the Prague Conservatory .

She made her operatic debut in Brno in 1962 , followed by engagements in Ostrava and Prague , and since 1970 she has been a member of the Stuttgart State Opera . At the Bayreuth Festival she appeared as Fricka in the Jahrhundertring under the direction of Patrice Chéreau and as Kundry in Parsifal by Richard Wagner . She was heard at the Deutsche Oper Berlin as Azucena in Il trovatore by Giuseppe Verdi , Laura in La Gioconda by Amilcare Ponchielli , at the Cologne Opera as Klytämnestra in Elektra by Richard Strauss , Ortrud in Lohengrin by Wagner, at the Covent Garden Opera in London , the Grand Opéra Paris and the Metropolitan Opera in New York . In the 1980s she appeared at the Vienna State Opera in the opera Rusalka by Antonín Dvořák both in the alto part of the witch and in the soprano part of the Foreign Princess.

She is considered a specialist in the Czech repertoire. For her portrayal of the sexton in the opera Jenufa by Leoš Janáček , she was awarded an acting award in London. Eva Randová was the artistic director of the State Opera in Prague from 1995 to 1998 .
