Matti Salminen (born July 7, 1945 in Turku ) is a Finnish opera singer ( bass ).

Life

Matti Salminen studied at the Turku Music Institute, at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki (among others with Matti Lehtinen ), as a scholarship holder in 1969 in Rome and in Düsseldorf. A soloist of the choir of the Finnish National Opera he got up when he at age 24 in the role of King Philip in Verdi's Don Carlos stepped in .

From 1972 to 1980 he was a member of the ensemble at the Cologne Opera, since 1984 he has been engaged at the Zurich Opera (1979: Seneca in L'incoronazione di Poppea , production Harnoncourt / Ponnelle ), where he gave his farewell concert on November 12, 2016. From 1976 to 1988 he sang in more than 150 performances at the Bayreuth Festival . From 1967 to 1998 he sang every summer at the Opera Festival in Savonlinna (Finland); from 1977 to 2013 he performed continuously at the Vienna State Opera . In April 2019, after the end of his career, he jumped in at short notice in three performances of the Meistersinger von Nürnberg as Veit Pogner at the Berlin State Opera .

Matti Salminen was twice involved in the award of a Grammy in the category of the best opera recording: 1983 for the Ring des Nibelungen (Bayreuth Festival) and 1992 for Götterdämmerung ( Metropolitan Opera New York).

Over time, he became one of the world's most recognized and sought-after artists in his field and was regularly on stage in almost all major opera houses and festivals. In September 2000, the first performance of the opera was written for him in Helsinki Lear of Aulis Sallinen place whose title role he took over. In addition to Finnish, he also speaks almost perfect German.
