Franz Endler

Franz Endler (born January 8, 1937 in Vienna ; † April 5, 2002 ibid) was an Austrian music critic and cultural journalist.

Life

Endler already received musical training as a student with the Vienna Boys' Choir , after graduating from high school he studied musicology at the University of Vienna and finally earned the Dr. phil. with the dissertation from 1981: Julius Korngold and the " Neue Freie Presse " . Endler began working as a music critic as early as 1956. He was a founding member of the Kronen Zeitung , subsequently wrote for the Bild-Telegraf , was head of the cultural departments of the newspapers Die Presse and Kurier (1988–97). From 1957 Endler also worked as a freelancer for the radio programs of the Austrian broadcasting company .

Endler made a name for himself as a critic of the directorial theater and main opponent of Gerard Mortier during his term in office in Salzburg . He also wrote books on cultural history and biographies on Karl Böhm , Herbert von Karajan and Johann Strauss . Endler died after a long, serious illness. He was buried at the Vienna Central Cemetery .

His first marriage was to the stage and costume designer Maxi Tschunko and his second marriage to Margit Hoffmann-Ostenhof.
