Michael Horowitz (born December 1, 1950 in Vienna ) is an Austrian writer, publisher and photographer. The author was best known for founding the Kurier magazine “Freizeit”, of which he was editor-in-chief for 25 years.

Life

Horowitz is the author of more than 20 books, including biographies about Heimito von Doderer , Egon Erwin Kisch , Karl Kraus and his friends HC Artmann , Otto Schenk and Helmut Qualtinger . Together with his wife Angelika, he founded the publishing house MHM - Michael Horowitz Media in 2002, in which, among other things, the book Displacing - Forgetting - Forgiving about Austria's darkest chapter with a foreword by Franz Vranitzky appeared. In the ambivalent declaration of love for his hometown, Golden Vienna , he remembers his childhood and youth. In the volume Herzensschlampereien he reflects on Arthur Schnitzler's work and private life. Michael Horowitz began taking photos while he was still in high school. On the occasion of Expo 2000 he and Franz Hubmann presented the photo documentation in the Austria Pavilion. His photos have been shown in various domestic and foreign galleries, including in Vienna, Salzburg during the Salzburg Festival and in Graz during the “steirischer herbst”. Most recently in 2016 in the Horowitz exhibition . 50 years of human images in the Jewish Museum Vienna. From February to April 2020, Horowitz's photographic life's work will be presented in the Albertina in Vienna.

Michael Horowitz also wrote scripts for film and television, including documentaries for ORF about Heimito von Doderer and Karl Kraus . His screenplay for the film Caracas was awarded the “Prix de la Jeunesse” at the Cannes Film Festival in 1989 . His play Ravenous Hunger was performed in the Rabenhof Theater in Vienna. He received several Austrian awards, including the Great Decoration of Honor for Services to the Republic of Austria , the Gold Medal of Honor of the Federal Capital Vienna , the Gold Decoration of Honor for Services to the State of Vienna and the Cross of Honor for Science and Art, 1st Class .

Since he was on stage with Willi Resetarits (Ostbahn-Kurti) in November 2005 in the large broadcasting hall of the Vienna Radiokulturhaus, the Wienerlied has become his musical love. Together with his newly founded jazz band “Die Herzensbrecher”, he repeatedly appears at home and abroad, most recently at a festival for the Wienerlied. With prominent partners such as Maja Hakvoort, Julia Stemberger, Werner Schneyder , Kurt Rydl and Heinz Zednik. Horowitz is married and has two daughters.
