The Maurine is an approximately 20 kilometer long left tributary of the Stepenitz in the extreme northwest of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania .

River course

The Maurine rises in a small wooded area between the villages of Carlow and Groß Rünz in the southwest of the district of Northwest Mecklenburg at 45 m above sea level. NHN and initially flows in a south-westerly direction. South of Carlow the watercourse turns to the north, flows through Carlow and takes on the Stover Mühlenbach north of the place . In its middle and lower section, the river runs past the villages of Niendorf and Groß Siemz . To the north of Groß Siemz, it passes under the federal motorway 20 . To the south of Schönberg, numerous ditches of a wetland drain into the Maurine on both sides. Four kilometers before it flows into the Stepenitz , the river reaches the small town of Schönberg and flows around the city's gardens. The Rupensdorfer Bach drains into the Maurine via the Oberteich . To the northeast of the city, the Maurine is crossed by the Lübeck – Bad Kleinen railway line and the 104 federal highway . The section between Schönberg and the estuary is part of the 501 hectare nature reserve Stepenitz and Maurine lowlands . In this area, on both sides of the river course, there are large-scale flow bogs .

The difference in height from the source to the mouth is about 45 meters. The size of the catchment area is 167 km².

Watershed

The source area of ​​the Maurine lies northeast of the North Sea-Baltic Sea Divide : While the Maurine flows over the Stepenitz and Trave into the Baltic Sea , the area southwest of the watershed drains over the Schaale , Sude and Elbe into the North Sea .

history

In a declaration to the Duchy of Mecklenburg-Strelitz dated February 16, 1887, the city ​​of Lübeck waived the exercise of its sovereign rights over the Maurine, which it had been entitled to since the Middle Ages.

The Maurine was straightened in the 1920s and 1930s.
