August the Elder , Duke of Braunschweig-Lüneburg (* 1568 ; † 1636 in Celle ) was Protestant administrator of Ratzeburg from 1610 to 1636 and Prince of Lüneburg from 1633 to 1636 .

Life

August was born in 1568 as the fifth of fifteen children to Wilhelm the Younger of the Guelph family and his wife Dorothea of ​​Denmark . As a young man he was in the service of Rudolf II as a colonel and fought in the wars against France and Turkey.

August 1610 became Protestant Bishop of Ratzeburg. Due to the family contract with his brothers, which was supposed to prevent a further division of the estate of the Principality of Lüneburg, he was not allowed to enter into a proper marriage, but lived with Ilse Schmidichen (also Ilsa Schmidigen) in a marriage-like relationship and had twelve children with her. These were raised to hereditary imperial nobility in 1625 under the name of Lüneburg .

August 1633 succeeded his deceased brother Christian as Prince of Lüneburg and in 1635 received the Principality of Calenberg -Göttingen. He continued the neutrality policy started by his brother during the Thirty Years War .

Duke August was buried in the royal crypt in the town church of St. Mary in Celle.
