Joseph Christopher Yates (born November 9, 1768 in Schenectady , Province of New York , † March 19, 1837 ibid) was an American politician and governor of the state of New York from 1823 to 1825 .

Early years and political advancement

Joseph Yates attended public schools in his homeland. After studying law, he began working as a lawyer in his hometown of Schenectady. Politically, he became a member of the Democratic Republican Party founded by Thomas Jefferson . Between 1798 and 1808 he was mayor of his hometown. From 1805 to 1808 he was also a member of the New York Senate . From 1808 to 1822 he was a judge on the state's Supreme Court.

Governor of New York

On November 6, 1822, Yates was elected the new governor of his state. He took office on January 1, 1823 and was able to exercise it until January 1, 1825. During this time new amendments to the state constitution were passed, which mainly related to the administration. After the end of his otherwise uneventful tenure, Yates retired from politics. He died in March 1837 in his hometown Schenectady. Joseph Yates was married three times and had three daughters in total.
