Teddy Redell

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Teddy Redell (born June 7, 1937 in Quitman , Arkansas , as Teddy DeLano Riedel ) is an American rockabilly , rock 'n' roll and country musician . Redell is one of the rather unknown rockabilly musicians, but has been performing regularly since the rockabilly revival.

Life

Childhood and youth

Teddy Redell grew up on his parents' farm in Arkansas. He learned to play the piano at school from his teacher, who concentrated on boogie woogie and ragtime , and wrote his first songs in his youth. At the age of 15 he received his own radio show on KWCB in Searcy , Arkansas, which became popular in the area through his version of the Steel Guitar Rag .

Career

As his show grew in popularity, Redell was hired by Lloyd Sutherland for live shows in Arkansas and radio appearances, and in 1952 Redell made his first recordings. In 1955, star Wayne took Rainey Redell on to his show and toured the country with him. He also got Redell for some time a place in the nationally broadcast WWVA Jamboree from Wheeling , West Virginia .

In 1956 Redell returned to Arkansas, where he joined Tommy Trent and his band. When Trent's singer dropped out for a recording session in 1959, Redell stepped in and recorded Knocking On the Backside , which was released on Vaden Records and became a jukebox hit in East Arkansas. His second single, recorded at King Studios in Cincinnati , Ohio , was released by Vaden in 1959, but it was his third single, Judy , which showed great promise in Arkansas and was therefore taken over by Atco Records . A year later Elvis Presley recorded the song and was able to stay at number one on the charts for a few weeks. It was Redell's greatest success, even if he wasn't in the charts himself. In 1960, while still under contract with Vaden, Redell made some unreleased recordings for Sun Records in Memphis , Tennessee .

In 1960, Redell's career was interrupted by military service, most of which he did in Texas . Meanwhile, he continued to play in small bars around El Paso . After returning to his home state of Arkansas in 1962, he began touring independently, teaming up with Sonny Burgess ' Pacers for a single on Razorback Records. In 1963 Redell withdrew more and more from the music business. He wrote various songs for Sonny James by 1964 , married that same year and settled in Rose Bud, Arkansas.

After playing in small clubs in the 1970s, he was visited by the Dutch producer Clees Klop in 1979 . With White Label Records an LP appeared with his Vaden shots and shortly thereafter a newly-established album. In 1988 he made his first appearance in Europe and released a live album on Collector Records . Further tours followed, including to Germany , and an appearance at the Hemsby Rock'n'Roll Weekend 2002. Redell continues to perform in his home state of Arkansas and at major rockabilly festivals.
