Lorraine Cortés-Vázquez
Lorraine A. Cortés-Vázquez (born October 18, 1950 ) is an American politician ( Democratic Party ). She was Secretary of State of New York from 2007 to 2010 .
Career
Nothing is known about Lorraine A. Cortés-Vázquez's youth. She received her undergraduate at Hunter College in New York City and its master at the Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service of New York University . She then went to Columbia University 's School of Non-Profit Management and the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University in Cambridge ( Massachusetts ).
Cortés-Vázquez was Executive Vice President for Multicultural Markets and Engagement of the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP). From 1996 to 2003 she worked in the non-profit sector. In this context, she also served as President of the Hispanic Federation in New York City during this time . From 2003 to 2007 she was Executive Director of ASPIRA and Corporate Vice President at Cablevision Systems in New York.
She worked under Governors Eliot Spitzer and David Paterson . As former Vice President for Government and Public Affairs at Cablevision she was chief of staff to former members of New York Roberto Ramirez. From 2001 to 2007 she sat on the New York State Board of Regents.
As Secretary of State of New York, she was officially responsible for accepting the resignation of Spitzer on March 17, 2008 from his office as governor of New York because of a sex scandal. It also accepted the resignation of US Senator Hillary Clinton , who then took up the post of Secretary of State under President Barack Obama in his newly formed cabinet .
Cortés-Vázquez is of Puerto Rican and Dominican descent. She is the second person of Puerto Rican descent to hold the post of Secretary of State in the United States . The other person is Pedro Cortés from Pennsylvania .
