The Hiwwel-Route is a cycle route in Rheinhessen , which connects the cities of Bingen am Rhein , Ingelheim am Rhein , Mainz , Alzey and Worms with the Rheinhessen hilly landscape for around 166 km . The name of the cycle path is derived from the Rheinhessen dialect - "Hiwwel" means "hill". The cycle path starts in Bingen am Rhein . Then it touches the Rhine-Hessian Switzerland and leads via Alzey back to the Rhine plain to Worms.

The Hiwwel route mainly uses asphalt farm and cycle paths . The route is asphalted or concreted for approx. 152 km, the remaining 14 km run - in several small sections - on water-bound gravel roads . Most of the route is flat to slightly hilly. Occasionally the route shares its route with other cycle paths, such as the Rhine or Selztal cycle path . It is marked throughout . Your multicolored logo depicts the route over the Rheinhessen hill country and bears the words "Hiwwel-Route". The cycle path is divided into four stages from 37 to 46 km in length.

Route

First stage

The first stage begins in the Rhine-Nahe triangle in Bingen am Rhein and leads to the Bingen- Kempten district . The Hiwwel route, following the Rhine Cycle Route, runs close to the Rhine until shortly before Ingelheim . It leaves this in the Selztal , from where it goes up to Ingelheim am Rhein ; Within Ingelheim, the cycle path is identical to the fruit route and the Selztal cycle path . Around Heidesheim am Rhein you pass the nature reserve slope areas before the main ascent, on an otherwise level and flat stage, up to Mainz-Finthen . Mainz city center can be reached via the districts of Gonsenheim and Mombach (43 km).

Second stage

From Mainz, the second stage initially always runs south to the Hechtsheim district . Before Ebersheim there are about 140 meters of altitude to be crossed over a distance of 7 km . There follows a descent to Harxheim ; We continue to Gau-Bischofsheim , from here identical with the Amiche cycle path to Undenheim, via Mommenheim (Rheinhessen) , Selzen to Hahnheim . Here the Selztal cycle path to Undenheim joins again. At Undenheim , the cycle path turns west towards Gabsheim . Another long ascent (90 m ascent on 5 km) shortly before the end of the stage near Wörrstadt allows wide views over the Rhine-Hessian hill country (37 km).

Third stage

The third stage leads from Wörrstadt through the Rommersheim district to Wallertheim , where the Wiesbach is crossed. Via Gumbsheim , Wöllstein , here a transition to the Appelbach cycle path is possible, and Stein-Bockenheim continues south to Wöllstein, Wonsheim , Eckelsheim , Wonsheim, Stein-Bockenheim and Wendelsheim . Between the towns of the Hiwwel route ranges from time to time to the conservation area Rheinhessen Switzerland approach. After Uffhofen , the Wiesbach is crossed again in Flonheim . From here, the bike path runs mostly on traffic-distant rural roads through the districts Bornheim , Lonsheim and Heimersheim to Alzey (40 km).

Fourth stage

Behind Alzey, the route runs not far from the streams from Selz and Weidas via Schafhausen to Framersheim and is therefore identical to the Selztal cycle path. Then it goes in the direction of Gau-Heppenheim , Dautenheim and Eppelsheim .

Via Gundersheim , Bermersheim , Flörsheim-Dalsheim and Nieder-Flörsheim you head south. After a few smaller climbs in the first half of the stage, the Hiwwel route in the Zellertal from Monsheim mostly follows the course of the Pfrimm and from here is identical to the Zellertal cycle path. It continues via Kriegsheim (Monsheim) , Worms-Pfeddersheim , Worms-Leiselheim , Worms-Hochheim . This stage ends in Worms at the Nibelungen Bridge Worms am Rhein (46 km).

Connecting cycle paths

The Hiwwel route runs parallel to other cycle paths from time to time. It connects different long-distance cycle paths and themed routes in Rheinhessen and neighboring regions.

Rail connection

The Hiwwel route is well integrated into the Rheinhessen rail network. Bingen, Ingelheim, Heidesheim and Mainz can be reached via the Rhine route . On the railway line from Mainz via Wörrstadt to Alzey , regional trains (RB) and Regionalexpresse (RE) run every half hour to hourly. The same applies to the route between Mainz and Worms .
