Kempten am Rhein is a district of the city of Bingen am Rhein in Rhineland-Palatinate , into which it was incorporated in 1939, and has around 1900 inhabitants.

history

Settlement in the area of Kempten since Roman times is documented by the discovery and partial excavation of Villa Rustica Kempten . Finds from the Hallstatt period , however, indicate an older settlement. The Romans called the village "Caput Montis" (Latin: head of the mountain), because the place is at the foot of the Rochusberg . The first documentary mention can be found in a deed of donation to the Lorsch Monastery . An unspecified benefactress named Imma (Emma) donated a property to Bingen an der "Chamunder Mark" ( in Binga ad Chamunder marca ) to the monastery. The document does not have a year, but falls into the government of Charlemagne , i.e. at the end of the 8th century. In a document from the year 1032 the name is "Camutin" or "Chamunder Mark". Kempten has had its current name since 1462. In that year Kempten was pledged by Archbishop Adolf together with Dromersheim and Ockenheim to the Margrave Karl von Baden . The Archbishop of Mainz, Diether von Isenburg , bought back the pledged property in 1480. The Mainz cathedral chapter came into possession of the place through barter. With the villages of Weiler , Trechtingshausen and Niederheimbach , Kempten was part of the Vizedomamt Bingen. The parish remained in the possession of the cathedral chapter until the end of the 18th century.
