Sponsheim is a district of Bingen am Rhein in Rhineland-Palatinate .

geography

The district is located in the south of the urban area not far from the Nahe .

Neighboring towns are: Laubenheim , Grolsheim , Dromersheim and Dietersheim .

history

Flint tools from prehistoric times suggest that as early as 600 BC BC people lived here. The Romans also settled here. At that time they built a villa rustica above the Roman road that came from Worms .

Sponsheim was first mentioned in a document in 745. In a major fire on All Saints' Day in 1859, almost the entire village was destroyed.

On April 22, 1972 Sponsheim was incorporated into Bingen with 665 residents at that time.

Attractions

Catholic Church of St. George

The parish church of St. George was built around 1500. In 1863 it was demolished because it was in disrepair and rebuilt in the years 1864–65.

In the list of cultural monuments in Bingen am Rhein, there are four individual monuments for Sponsheim .

traffic

The federal motorway 61 with its motorway triangle Nahetal is nearby. Through the triangle one can also reach the federal highway 60 cheaply. It can be reached by means of a descent. Furthermore, the federal road 50 leads through Sponsheim.
