Robert Allen Stanford (born March 24, 1950 in Mexia , Texas ) is an American entrepreneur , financier and convicted investment fraud .

Life

Stanford was born in Mexia , Texas . His father was the mayor of Mexia and a board member of the Stanford Financial Group . His mother was a nurse. Stanford's parents divorced in 1959. Stanford and his brother stayed with his mother. Both parents remarried. Stanford graduated from Fort Worth , Texas High School . In 1974 Stanford graduated from Baylor University in Waco , Texas with a degree in finance . In 1975 Stanford married Susan Stanford, with whom he has a son. Stanford and his wife are currently separated. In the early 1980s, Stanford was in the Texas real estate business. He worked for his father, James Stanford, until he retired from Stanford Financial Group in 1993 and left control of the company to his son.

The Stanford-owned company Stanford Financial Group was led by him as chairman of the board. In addition to his US citizenship, Stanford has dual citizenship of Antigua and Barbuda . He was honored by the Commonwealth with the knighthood of the Governor General of Antigua and Barbuda James Carlisle .

As a cricket fan , Stanford founded and sponsored the Stanford 20/20 cricket tournament in Antigua and Barbuda.

In early 2009, international media reported investigations by US authorities against Allen Stanford. He was accused of having defrauded investors of around US $ 7 billion (EUR 5.3 billion) over a period of 20 years using a Ponzi scheme . On June 19, 2009, Stanford surrendered to the police. On June 14, 2012, Allen Stanford was sentenced to 110 years in prison by a court in Houston, Texas . He had previously declared himself innocent on all charges.
