Mexia (pronunciation: [ mɘ̄hɘ̄ja ]) is a city in Limestone County in the US state of Texas in the United States .
geography
The city is located at the junction of the US Highway 84 with the Highways 14 and 171 in the middle east of Texas, about 65 km east of Waco and has a total area of 13.3 km² without any significant water surface.
history
The place was named after the Mexia family , who settled on the site of today's city in 1833. In 1871 the Houston and Texas Central Railway moved its tracks here and in 1872 the first post office was opened. The first newspaper, the Ledger , was founded in Fairfield in 1869 and relocated there in the same year.
In Mexia, a prisoner of war camp was set up during World War II , to which many members of the former Africa Corps of the German Wehrmacht were brought.

According to the 2000 census, 6,563 people in 2,427 households and 1,660 families lived here. The population density was 492.0 inhabitants per km². The racial the population was composed of 55.90% White, 31.68% African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, and 10.67% other ethnic groups. About 1.33% were mixed race and 17.90% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 2,427 households, 36.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 44.7% of these were married couples living together. 19.7% were single mothers and 31.6% were non-families. 28.1% of all households were single households and there were people living in 15.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.21.
30.1% of the population were under 18 years old, 10.0% 18 to 24, 25.0% 25 to 44, 18.5% 45 to 64, and 16.4% who were 65 years of age or older . The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females of all age groups, there were 84.5 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 77.5 men.
The median income for a household in the 22,785 USD , and the median income for a family 29,375 USD. Males had a median income of $ 26,479 versus $ 18,138 for females. The per capita income was $ 12,235. 22.1% of the population and 20.8% of families are below the poverty line. Of these, 28.5% were children and adolescents under the age of 18 and 15.2% were 65 or older.
