Sir James Beethoven Carlisle GCMG (* 5 August 1937 in Bolans ( Antigua )) is an Antiguan politician and former governor-general of Antigua and Barbuda .

Studies and professional career

After completing school at Bolans Public School, he first completed a general education course at Northampton College of Technology in Great Britain . He later earned a degree in dentistry at the University of Dundee , which he with a Bachelor ended. Between 1961 and 1966 he was also a soldier in the British Royal Air Force .

After working as a dentist in Great Britain, he returned to Antigua in 1981, where he established himself as the island's fourth dentist. In addition to his private practice, he also worked as a dentist in the state's health service. While working as a dentist, he founded, with the help of Prime Minister Vere Cornwall Bird , one of his patients, a fluoride program for the prophylaxis of dental caries in children and an institute for independent dentistry. He was also a member of the International Society of Laser Dentists and the British Association for Dentistry. He also completed postgraduate studies at the American School of Laser Dentistry in 1991 . Between 1983 and 1993 he was also a dentist officer in the armed forces ( Royal Antigua and Barbuda Defense Force ).

Political career and promotion to governor general

On June 10, 1993, he was nominated as the successor to Sir Wilfred E. Jacobs by Prime Minister Bird as the first local Governor General of Antigua and Barbuda and Queen Elizabeth II was appointed as their representative as head of state. In the same year he was beaten by the Queen to the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St. Michael and St. George (GCMG) and thus raised to the personal nobility .

His membership of the Seventh-day Adventist Church , which kept official appointments on Saturday, the Adventist Sabbath, and did not serve alcohol to official guests, led to controversy, especially when he attended Prince Charles' wedding in the Windsor Registry despite a Saturday Office took part and also drank the champagne served there.

On July 17, 2007, he then handed the office of Governor General to Louise Lake-Tack , the first woman in that office.

For his services he was inducted into the Order of St. John as Knight of Justice . He also received an honorary doctorate in law (LLD) from Andrews University in Michigan , a Seventh-day Adventist university .
