Arthur Rich

Arthur Rich (born January 21, 1910 in Neuhausen am Rheinfall ; † July 25, 1992 in Zurich ) was a Swiss theologian , social and economic ethicist . In 1964 he founded the Institute for Social Ethics at the University of Zurich , of which he was director until 1977.

Life

Arthur Rich grew up in Neuhausen and Schaffhausen . He first completed an apprenticeship as a mechanic, then took the secondary school leaving certificate and studied theology in Zurich and Paris from 1932 to 1938 . From 1938 to 1947 he worked as a pastor in the Reformed parish of Hemmental . In 1947 he received his doctorate in theology from the University of Zurich. From 1948 to 1954 he was director of the teachers' college in Schaffhausen. After his habilitation at the Theological Faculty of the University of Zurich in 1952, he was appointed full professor for systematic and practical theology and held this chair from 1954 to 1976. In 1964 he founded the Institute for Social Ethics at the University of Zurich, which he was director until 1977 . After his retirement in 1975 he was given a teaching position for social ethics at the ETH Zurich . In 1985 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of St. Gallen .

Arthur Rich was married to Elisabeth Schneider since 1938.
