Fond du Lac is located in central southeast Wisconsin. The French name means something like "foot of the lake" and comes from the fact that the city is located at the southern end of Lake Winnebago (the largest lake entirely in the state of Wisconsin).
The geographical coordinates of Fond du Lac are 43 ° 46'30 "north latitude and 88 ° 26'42" west longitude. The urban area extends over an area of 47.1 km², which is spread over 43.7 km² of land and 3.4 km² of water.

The four-lane US Highways 41 and 151 form the southwest, southern and southeastern bypass roads of the city. The US Highway 45 leading into a north-south direction through the center of Fond du Lac.
