Eleanor Kinnaird (born November 14, 1931 in Rochester , Michigan ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party .

Kinnaird attended Carleton College, where she received her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1953 . She later studied at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill . In 1992 she received her Juris Doctor from the Law School of North Carolina Central University . 1973 to 1982 Kinnaird worked as a private teacher for music. She then worked from 1982 to 1989 at the University of North Carolina Music Library and the Wilson Library . Upon receiving her Juris Doctor, Kinnaird began practicing law. She first worked for North Carolina Prisoner Legal Services from 1993 to 2003and has been self-employed since 2004 .

Kinnaird's political career began when she was mayor of the city of Carrboro from 1987 to 1995 . She has served as a Senator for the North Carolina Senate since 1996.

Kinnaird is divorced and has three children.
