Carrboro is a small town in the US state of North Carolina with a population of just under 20,000.
It is named after the industrial philanthropist Julian Carr from neighboring Chapel Hill , who supplied the local cotton mills with electricity.
The city gained national fame through the country's first self-confessed gay mayor, Mike Nelson, who ran from 1995 to 2005.
The rockabilly band Flat Duo Jets and the Carrboro Music Festival are examples of why the city was named one of America's one hundred best art cities in 2005.
