Danilo Türk (born February 19, 1952 in Maribor , SR Slovenia , Yugoslavia ) is a Slovenian lawyer, diplomat and politician. From 2007 to 2012 he was the President of Slovenia .

Life

Türk studied law at the University of Ljubljana and Belgrade University and was or is in Ljubljana as a lecturer from 1978, and since 1995 as a full professor of international law . From 2006 to 2007 he was deputy rector of the university. From 1992 to 2000 he was Slovenia's Ambassador to the United Nations . At the beginning of 2000 he was appointed by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan as his political assistant (until 2005).

In the first round of the Slovenian presidential elections in 2007 on October 21, 2007, without being a member of a political party himself, he won as a candidate for the Socialni Demokratie and other center-left parties with 24.5% (just ahead of Mitja Gaspari , Liberal Democracy of Slovenia , 24.1%) took second place, so that Türk went into the runoff election on November 11th against the conservative Lojze Peterle (28.7%). Danilo Türk won the runoff election with 68.03% and thus became President of Slovenia.

In the first round of the Slovenian presidential elections in 2012 on November 11, 2012, he only achieved second place with 35.9%, behind his challenger Borut Pahor , who this time was a candidate for the Socialni Demokrati and received 39.9% of the vote. In the runoff election on December 2, 2012, he was defeated by Pahor with only 32.6% of the vote.

In 2016, Türk was nominated by the Slovenian government for the election of the Secretary General of the United Nations ; Of the total of 9 candidates, the former Portuguese Prime Minister António Guterres was able to prevail.

In 2010, he and 14 other people (including Milan Kučan , Peter Mankoč and Marjan Turnšek ) founded the Pustimo jim sanje - Fundacija Danila Türka (Let them dream - Danilo Türk Foundation), which works for children who are victims of domestic violence or armed conflicts.

Türk is a Protector Member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts .

Danilo Türk has been married to Barbara Miklič-Türk (* 1948), who studied English and Russian language and literature, since 1976. You have a daughter.
