The large tuber (also called large tuber or colloquially called tuber , historical name also large tuber ) is 687.4  m above sea level. NHN high mountain of the Harz near Sieber in the non-parish Harz region of the district of Göttingen , Lower Saxony ( Germany ).

Geographical location

The large tuber is located in the Upper Harz in the Harz Nature Park . It rises 6.3 km east-northeast of Herzberg am Harz , 5 km northeast of Scharzfeld , 5 km northwest of Bad Lauterberg in the Harz Mountains and 3.5 km south of the Herzberg district Sieber . It is surrounded by several mountains that reach heights of 550 to 650 m. In a south-westerly direction, the Kleine Knollen ( 631  m ) is less than 1 km away . The Bremke tributary of the Oder rises between large and small tubers .

geology

The Big Tuber is a porphyry volcano . When climbing the mountain, you can sometimes see the reddish color in the rock at the edge of the path, which is characteristic of the volcanic rock porphyry. About 800 m east of the Großer Knollens is the Knollengrube , in which iron ore was mined until 1925.

Forest cover

Today the large tuber is predominantly overgrown with beech in the lower elevations and partially with spruce in the higher elevations . In 1596 it was completely overgrown with beeches, in 1630 partly with maples .

From 1904 built 20 meter high observation tower Knoll tower , along with the inn Knoll Baude tubers stands on the summit of the Great, one looks not only over the mountains of the resin, but also to the south to Rotenberg and Eichsfeld . In this direction you can even see the Großer Inselsberg in the Thuringian Forest with good visibility .

The European long-distance hiking trail E6 runs over the Großer Knollen .

There are numerous hiking trails from its summit , including to Bad Lauterberg, Herzberg, Scharzfeld, Sieber and Sankt Andreasberg . The approximately 12 km long path to Sankt Andreasberg runs on a 600 m high mountain ridge with many beautiful views.

The large tuber is located on the Harzer Baudensteig and is included as No. 150 in the system of stamping points of the Harzer hiking pin.
