The Great Auerberg in the Harz Mountains is 580.4 m above sea level. NHN high mountain near Stolberg in the municipality of Südharz in the district of Mansfeld-Südharz in Saxony-Anhalt . It is a double peak of 580.4 m (Großer Auerberg) and 580.3 m (Josephshöhe) , which are about 470 m apart.
Geographical location
The Große Auerberg rises in the Lower Harz in the Harz / Saxony-Anhalt Nature Park between Straßberg in the northeast (to the town of Harzgerode ), Hayn in the southeast, Schwenda in the south, Stolberg in the southwest and Breitenstein in the northwest (all to the municipality of Südharz ). The Thyra tributary Krummschlachtbach rises east of the mountain , west of the Thyra source stream Kleine Wilde .
geology
The Auerberg is made up of rhyolite ( quartz porphyry ), a volcanic rock . The “Stolberger Diamonds” are embedded in the finely crystalline base material, up to 13 mm in size crystallized quartz and orthoclase .
Joseph Cross
On the Josephshöhe ( 580.3 m ) the 38 m high Josephskreuz was erected in 1896 , an observation tower made of steel framework in the form of a double cross. From its viewing platform, you can see the Brocken , the highest mountain in the Harz Mountains, among other things .
Traffic and walking
North and east past the Great Auerberg leads between Breitenstein and Schwenda the national road 236, formerly known as resin Schützenstraße formed the border between Thuringia and Saxony. The mountain top can be reached in about 15 minutes on foot from the parking lot at the Auerberg settlement or from that of the Schindelbruch nature resort . The hiking trail from Schindelbruch to Josephskreuz is called Straße der Lieder . There are 16 text panels with German folk songs along the way .
The Josephshöhe is included as no. 215 in the system of stamping points of the Harz hiking pin; the stamping point is near the Josephskreuz.
