The Barenberg , formerly also called Bärenberg or Bärenkopf , is 695.5  m above sea level. NHN high elevation in the Harz near the Schierke district of the city of Wernigerode in the Harz district , Saxony-Anhalt ( Germany ).

Geographical location

The Barenberg rises in the Upper Harz (Hochharz) in the Harz / Saxony-Anhalt Nature Park . It is located around 1.3 km south-southeast of the former Hüttenort Schierke on the Kalten Bode and around 1.5 km northwest of the Elend district of the town of Oberharz am Brocken, which is also located on this river .

In a north-westerly direction, the wooded landscape of the Barenberg leads west past Schierke to the Brocken ( 1141.1  m ). The north-north- eastern neighboring dome is the foothills of the Hohnekamm ( 900.6  m ) on the other side of Schierke ( Erdbeerkopf) ( 847.7  m ). To the south-southeast lies the Rauher Jakob ( 568.6  m ). To the west-northwest is the mountain group of Wurmberg ( 971.2  m ), Großem Winterberg ( 906.4  m ) and Kleinem Winterberg ( 837  m ).

On the mountain or in its vicinity which are Schnarcherklippen (west-northwest), the mice Cliff (northwest) and the Scherstorklippen (west-southwest).

In the northeast, east and southeast falls the landscape of Barenbergs into the cliff-lined and designated as a nature reserve Elendstal (NSG no. 162919) with the Cold Bode from that at a riverside between Schierke and misery measuring point ( 514.4  m ) flows 181.1 m below the mountain peak.

Hiking and viewing opportunities

The Barenberg can only be reached on forest and hiking trails, for example coming from Schierke or Elend.

About 450 m south-southeast of the mountain summit is the lookout pulpit on the Barenberg (approx.  620  m ), which is included as No. 20 in the system of stamping points of the Harz hiking pin and, for example, can be reached via a steep descent from the direction of the mountain summit is. From the pulpit the view falls, among other things, to Schierke, the Elendstal , to Elend, to the strawberry head with the Mocking comb and the Mocking Cliffs there . The Elendsburg once stood east of the pulpit in the Elendstal .
