Geographical location
The Great Winterberg rises in the Harz / Saxony-Anhalt Nature Park and in the Harz National Park directly northeast of the border with Lower Saxony. Its summit is about 2.5 km west-southwest of the village of Schierke, which belongs to the city of Wernigerode . To the north-northwest the landscape drops into the valley of the Kalten Bode , beyond that the Brocken rises ( 1141.1 m ), which is in front of the western Königsberg ( 1033.5 m ) and the eastern Heinrichshöhe (approx. 1045 m ). The Hohnekamm ( 900.6 m ; with Hohneklippen ) rises north-east to east-northeast beyond the Schierke on the Kalten Bode . The Kleine Winterberg ( 837 m ) joins in the southeast . In the south-west the landscape leads over to the Wurmberg, located on the other side of the state border. The Green Belt Germany , which the Harzer Grenzweg follows, runs over the mountain .
Winter sports area
As part of the Wurmberg 2015 concept, which is currently being planned, a lift system or gondola lift with four new, artificial snow-making runs is to be built in the area between Großes and Kleiner Winterberg and Wurmberg in the direction of the village of Schierke. There are also plans for “mystical hiking trails”, a scooter route, a storage pond as a reservoir for snowmaking, and other attractions, such as a helium- filled balloon with a 23 m diameter and a maximum ascent height of 150 to 300 m. More than 40 hectares of spruce forest would have to be cleared for the slopes . In the area of the Großer Winterberg, particularly protected biotopes, including grasslands, a wetland and flowing water, would be directly affected, as well as other protected biotopes such as dry heather and a stand of cotton- grass spruce nearby. Hillside affected birds were nutcracker , black woodpecker and tree pipit and its surroundings Sperlings- and Raufußkauz and Ring Ouzel . The planning requires extensive, legally required compensation measures.
