The northeastern ...
... and the southwestern snore cliff

The Schnorerklippen are an impressive, two- tower granite rock formation (up to 671  m above sea  level ) near Schierke in the Harz low mountain range in the Harz district in Saxony-Anhalt .

Geographical location

The snorer cliffs are located in the Hochharz in the Harz / Saxony-Anhalt nature park between the villages of Schierke in the north and Elend in the southeast on the northwest flank of the wooded Barenberg ( 695.5  m above sea level ), which rises west of the Kalten Bode valley . In the vicinity are the Mäuseklippe in the northwest and the Scherstorklippen in the southwest.

General

The two 25 m to 28 m high rock towers of the Schnore Cliffs, which are around 20 m apart from each other, belong to the Brocken granite stock and are clearly weathered by wool sacks . A special feature of the cliffs is the deflection of the compass needle from its north direction due to the occurrence of magnetite in the rock. When the wind is blowing from the south-east, the cliffs make strange noises, which were the inspiration behind the name.

Goethe and the cliffs

On his third trip to the Harz Mountains in September 1784, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe also visited the snore cliffs. These were mentioned in Faust I and Faust II :

See the trees behind trees,
how they pass quickly,
and the cliffs that stoop,
and the long rock noses,
how they snore, how they blow!

Goethe (Faust I)

The Blocksberg remains a very comfortable place,
wherever you are, you can find yourself.
Frau Ilse watches for us on her stone,
Heinrich will be lively at his height,
The snorers indeed sniff at the misery,
But everything is done for a thousand years.

Goethe (Faust II)

Hiking and climbing

The shortest way to get to the snorer cliffs is via a hiking trail from Schierke. They are included as no. 14 in the system of stamping points of the Harz hiking pin. The Schnarcherklippe stamping point is located in a shelter near the cliffs .

The north-eastern rock can be climbed using several iron ladders, the south-western rock is reserved for climbers . In Kletterführer "Paules climbing Bible Ostharz" 21 are on the southwest cliff routes the difficulty I to VIIIb (Saxon scale) described. The 26 routes on the northeast tower have difficulties from IV to IXc.

Possibility of viewing

From the peaks of the Schnarcherklippen the view falls to the holiday resort Schierke in the north, Erdbeerkopf in the north-northeast with the Hohnekamm beyond , Barenberg in the southeast, Brocken massive in the northwest, Wurmberg in the west.
