About this picture
Location of Stempeda in Nordhausen

Stempeda is a district of the city of Nordhausen in the Nordhausen district in Thuringia.

geography

Stempeda is located in the north of the state of Thuringia in the Krebsbach - Thyra lowlands in the historic Helmegau . The Wolfsbach flows through the village and flows into the Krebsbach at the western development boundary.

history

Today's Haufendorf developed from a Franconian-Thuringian settlement , which was first mentioned in a document in 1312 in the Nordhausen civic register . There the place is called Stempede. In the documents of the Counts of Stolberg it is called 1378 Stempede and 1417 Stempeda.

In 1944 and 1945, the caves in the nearby steep slope belonged to Project B4, a satellite camp of the Mittelbau-Dora concentration camp . Up to 700 concentration camp prisoners had to do forced labor here, including 455 Jews . At least 50 prisoners were killed as a result of mistreatment by the SS troops or illness. In April 1945 the survivors were driven on two death marches , during which many died in the massacre in the Isenschnibber field barn in Gardelegen or in other places en route. It is criticized that the barracks that still exist today lack any reminder of this past.

On December 1, 2007, Stempeda was incorporated into Nordhausen with the last 300 inhabitants.

  • Since 1985 a stele in Nordhäuser Straße has been commemorating the victims of the death marches from the Dora-Mittelbau concentration camp
  • A circular hiking trail leads from the Weißen Stieg over the Mullerteich to the Iberg dam.
