history
prehistory
The largest contiguous archaeological excavation in Thuringia takes place near Bielen. The finds from settlements and graves cover the period from about 5,000 BC, from the Neolithic to the Iron Age . Particularly noteworthy are a very large barrow and a circular moat for ritual and astronomical purposes.
History from documentary mention
The place is mentioned for the first time on March 16, 1158 in a document from Emperor Friedrich I as Biela . At the request of the abbess Cecilia, Frederick left the imperial castle and the royal court of Nordhausen to the nunnery in Nordhausen in exchange for two pounds denarii of annual income in Windehausen and Bielen.
The place was plundered in 1404 by Count Dietrich von Hohnstein in the Flegler War.
Bielen was in the Heringen district and in 1417 came under the joint administration of the Counts of Schwarzburg and Stolberg . In 1819 Bielen was integrated into the Prussian province of Saxony .
In the British bombing raid on Nordhausen on April 3, 1945, 17 residents of Bielen were killed.
After the Second World War , the mining of gravel and sand was started in the river floodplain of the Helme for the regional building materials industry, several quarry ponds remained, which are now used, among other things, for diving.
In the 1960s, the Bielener See was created through gravel mining .
