The Elfenstein is about 475 m above sea level. NHN high mountain spur of the northern roofing of the Harz with quartz rocks of the same name above the core town of Bad Harzburg in the non-parish Harz region of the Goslar district ( Lower Saxony ).
Geographical location
The Elfenstein is located in the Upper Harz in the Harz Nature Park . It rises west of the core town of Bad Harzburg and southwest of the Harzburg district of Bündheim between the valley of the Gläsecke in the west and that of the Bleiche in the east.
Description and history
On the mountain is the granite rock formation Elfenstein (around 450 m ), which was first mentioned in writing in 1578 as Elwenstein . In the Middle Ages, the rocks were considered the dwelling place of elves and similar luminous figures.
Archaeological finds in the area indicate settlement in the Bronze Age . On the northeast flank of the wooded mountain, near the path between the Bleichebach and the former Silberborn , an old Germanic dwelling and burial site was discovered in 1857 .

From the Elfenstein rock formation , accessible via stairs , which is included as no. 120 in the system of stamping points of the Harz hiking pin, the view falls on Bad Harzburg and the northern Harz foreland .
