The Glockenstein is a prominent boulder in the district of Thale in Saxony-Anhalt in the Harz Mountains .

location

It is located at a height of 507 meters, other information is 400 meters, south of Thale in the forest area between Stecklenberg and Thale, on the south side of a forest path. The Reineckenbach runs about 100 meters to the northwest . Next to the bell stone is a Dennert fir tree that explains details about the stone.

The bell stone is integrated as number 73 in the system of the Harz hiking pin.

nature

The bell stone is made of Ramberg granite and its shape is reminiscent of a bell, from which its name derives. Notches can be seen on its left side as well as on the back, which suggest that the stone was intended for processing as part of the quarry work in the area around the Wurmbach Valley and that it only just escaped destruction. The bell stone was protected as a geological natural monument in 1981 .

History and legend

It is believed that the stone served as an old Germanic place of worship in prehistoric times. In the past, the ridge was treeless. There was then possibly a direct north-facing visual relationship to the camel near Westerhausen , which is also regarded as a place of worship , which could have been important for observing the sky.

According to a legend, a tone sounds from the bell stone on Walpurgis Night and shows the witches the way to the Hexentanzplatz , where they celebrate and move on to Blocksberg together . Other details name the Brocken as the destination .
