Stecklenberg originated at the foot of the Stecklenburg and the slightly higher Lauenburg . Both castles are now ruins and can be visited as such. The place was the seat of its own office, which in 1815 came to the administrative district of Magdeburg of the Prussian province of Saxony . Due to the chlorine-calcium source in the village, tourism developed to an increasing extent around 1900.

On September 30, 1928, the main estate of the Stecklenberg estate was combined with the Stecklenberg rural community, while smaller areas of the estate were combined with the Neinstedt rural community, the city of Thale and the Bad Suderode rural community.

The Stecklenberg domain had been in the possession of the Barons von dem Bussche-Streithorst since 1861 .

On November 23, 2009, the previously independent community of Stecklenberg was incorporated into Thale.
