A pile place also Köhler place , Meiler- carbon plate , Koehler plate , Koehler platform is the site of a coal kiln . Since the Meilerplatte only represents part of the Meilerplatz, the term Köhlerplatte is misleading.

Site conditions for a kiln site are access to water, to extinguish the coals, as well as a sheltered location in order to avoid uncontrolled burning of the kiln. It should also be close to the forest areas used.

There are three types:

Old kiln sites can be recognized by their shape, their sediment layer colored black by the wood tar and by bits of coal lying around. Most of the clearly visible kiln sites in the German low mountain range date from the 16th to the 19th century.
