history

Good Shepherd Church 1963

The Catholic parish from 1937 had to be divided in 1957 due to the rapidly growing population. At that time there was no church for the parishioners. It was not until after the Second World War that permission was obtained from the Archbishop's Ordinariate, which was granted on November 12, 1954.

As a result, the Church of the Good Shepherd was built between 1955 and 1957 according to plans by the Basel architect Hermann Berger. It was inaugurated on November 10, 1957 by then Auxiliary Bishop and later Archbishop of Freiburg Hermann Schäufele .

Only after the church was consecrated, namely on July 31, 1960, the organ was consecrated and the bells were consecrated on December 17, 1967.

description

Building

The church is located between Hauptstrasse and the Rheinschule in the Friedlingen district and is adjacent to the Evangelical Peace Church, which was built in the early 1960s . The hall church has a cuboid structure and measures 34.5 meters in length, 19 meters in width and 13 meters in height. The roof is a shallow pitched roof covered. At the southwest corner there is a 35 meter high free, rectangular campanile , which is connected to the church by a small bridge. Under the bridge is the entrance to the community hall with the adjacent outdoor area. The church itself can be reached via a forecourt and entered via the main entrance either via stairs or a wheelchair-accessible ramp.

Furnishing

The concrete elements of the north and south walls of the choir are interrupted by colored skylights. The glazing comes from the Freiburg artist Benedikt Schaufelberger, who also created the mosaic cross and other works for the church. On the south side of the church he created the Way of the Cross in mosaic technique, on the north side the paintings of Blessed Bernhard von Baden, the Martyrs of Uganda and the Pietà .

The massive granite altar by Leonhard Eder is raised in the middle of the choir. To the right of the altar is the tabernacle of the goldsmith Nikolaus Epp. The simple ambo is also made of granite .
