Leonhard Eder (born January 4, 1933 in St. Johann, today Jánossomorja , Hungary) is a German sculptor .

life and work

Born in Sankt Johann in Wieselburg County in western Hungary (today Jánossomorja / Mosonszentjános in Győr-Moson-Sopron County ), he came to Lauda in 1946 as a displaced person in the Main-Tauber district of northeast Württemberg . In Bad Mergentheim he completed an apprenticeship as a sculptor. After years of apprenticeship and traveling in southern Germany, he moved to southern Baden , attended the master school for stonemasons and sculptors in Freiburg im Breisgau , where he passed the master craftsman examination with distinction in 1957 .

After a short time as a designer and draftsman in the stone industry and a tour of several months through Mediterranean countries, he moved to Rheinfelden (Baden) in 1958 , where he married his wife Maria in 1959 and opened a small stone-cutting and sculpting company with a few employees in the same year. In 1967 he was accepted into the Federal Association of Visual Artists (BBK). In 1971 he co-founded the "Free Hochrhein Group" with nine other artists and - also in the early 1970s - of the "Kunstverein Hochrhein". He is also a member of the “Association of Christian Artists, Archdiocese of Freiburg ” (GCK). Since the mid-1990s, he has been working as a freelance artist again without employees. He lives and works both in Rheinfelden and on a farm in the southern Black Forest hamlet of Fetzenbach (municipality of Gersbach ).

The "fool's fountain" in Bad Säckingen

Numerous stone and metal objects by Leonhard Eder's hand in southwest Germany and beyond were the result of direct orders or won competitions for public clients - especially the church -, often as art in architecture .

The main subject of Eder's work is the human being, often the female body and the theme of mother. Originally his works were abstract, partly inspired by Cubism , later increasingly also representational. Leonhard Eder, however, never closely followed a stylistic model, but dealt individually with the respective task, the properties of the material and the given environment. In an early phase he dealt with welded metal, later also with concrete, but mainly with natural stone (sandstones, granite, marbles).

Eder has a total of five children. His two sons, Tobias (* 1966) and Matthias (* 1968), who were born in Rheinfelden (Baden) , are also sculptors, trained by their father. His son Martin also did an apprenticeship with him, but then became an architect in Lörrach (Dietzig Architects). His sister is a draftsman.

The Lörrach sculptor Konrad Winzer (* 1955) apprenticed with Leonhard Eder from 1971 to 1974.

On January 6, 2009, Eder was honored with the Silver Medal of Merit by the City of Rheinfelden (Baden).
