Matthias Eder (born April 28, 1968 in Rheinfelden ) is a contemporary German sculptor .

Life

Matthias Eder is a son of the sculptor Leonhard Eder and a younger brother of the sculptor Tobias Eder .

From 1986 he completed an apprenticeship as a stone sculptor with his father, which he completed in 1993 with the master's examination. He then studied at the Academy of Design in Aachen until 1995 and from 1995 to 2000 at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart with Professors Micha Ullman , Karin Sander and Jana Grzimek , graduating as an Academic Sculptor. Since 2000 he has been working as a freelance artist.

His work is characterized on the one hand by dealing with the topic of communication, on the other hand by dealing with the contrast between inside and outside. These themes are expressed, for example, in flat material shapes (e.g. panels) and surfaces that are processed in the manner of skin, or in his seating group installations, which are designed to form a circle and set up in lively places.

Matthias Eder is married and has four children. He lives and works in Leonberg near Stuttgart, where in autumn 2007 he acquired the former women's prison from the state of Baden-Württemberg , which is now a listed building and is now part of the art mile in the historic old town of Leonberg. In the building, Eder realizes his concept of the “art cell” as the nucleus for artistic and cultural creation with a studio, exhibition, gallery and event rooms.
