The Aluminum Rheinfelden Group is a German manufacturer of aluminum products . The company is based in Rheinfelden (Baden) in the Lörrach district in Baden-Württemberg .

history

Factory in Rheinfelden

"Alu" was founded in 1898 by the Swiss Aluminum Industrie Aktiengesellschaft ( AIAG for short , later Alusuisse ) as the first aluminum smelter in Germany. On May 31 of the year, ten years after the AIAG commissioned Europe's first aluminum smelter in Neuhausen am Rheinfall , ten electrolysis furnaces went into operation in Rheinfelden . The reason and prerequisite for the settlement of this energy-intensive industry was the construction of Europe's first run-of-river power plant , which had only been carried out three years earlier, at this point on the previously undeveloped German bank of the Rhine . This was accompanied by the rapid influx of many workers, which only led to the emergence and later development of the young city of Rheinfelden (Baden).

1964 began with the construction of the slug factory, then called LMG (light metal casting). The maximum capacity at peak times was up to 62,000 tons / year. Due to the rise in electricity prices since around 1970, Aluminum Rheinfelden gradually withdrew from the electricity-costly electrolysis production of raw metal by 1991. In 1993, Alu was separated from the parent company Alusuisse in a management buy-out . The slug production at that time was around 13,000 tons / year. Through modernization and expansion, the capacity has been increased to around 25,000 tons to date (2010).

The company health insurance fund of Aluminum Rheinfelden was one of the founding funds of the former BKK Hochrhein-Wiesental in 1996 ( merged with mhplus BKK in 2007 ).

The entrepreneur Alois Josef Franke died on April 14, 2019 in his hometown of Rheinfelden (Baden). He was 78 years old.

structure

Production is assigned to the three business areas Alloys , Semis and Carbon . Since October 1, 2008, these have been run as independent GmbH & Co. KG (Rheinfelden Alloys GmbH & Co. KG, Rheinfelden Semis GmbH & Co. KG, Rheinfelden Carbon GmbH & Co. KG). Their general partner is a specially founded Verwaltungs-GmbH (Rheinfelden Alloys Verwaltungs GmbH for Alloys, Rheinfelden Semis Verwaltungs GmbH for Semis and Rheinfelden Carbon Verwaltungs GmbH for Carbon).

Memorial stone for the centenary

Aluminum Rheinfelden GmbH , led by Managing Director Alois Franke , has only acted as a holding company and limited partner for the management companies of the three operational divisions since October 1, 2008 . The holding company is also responsible for the Group's infrastructure (e.g. electricity, gas and water supply, sewage and waste disposal, plant fire brigade, plant security, finance and accounting, information technology).

  • Rheinfelden Alloys : Primary aluminum casting alloys for the automotive industry. Rheinfelden Alloys is the world market leader in aluminum casting alloys for crash-relevant automotive structural parts. The alloys developed by "Alu" are manufactured under license by other companies for the non-European market ( Noranda Aluminum Inc., which belongs to Apollo Management, in Missouri / USA, the Vale subsidiary Valesul Aluminio SA in Rio de Janeiro / Brazil and by the state-owned Dubai Aluminum / Dubal in Dubai / United Arab Emirates) or distributed ( Itochu Corp. in Tokyo). The products for the European market come from our own production facility in Rheinfelden.
  • Rheinfelden Semis : Semi-finished products (slugs), punched from pure aluminum; used e.g. B. for aerosol cans, tubes, car fire extinguishers, condenser cups, car filter housings or thermal bases of stainless steel pots. With an annual production of 22,000 tons, aluminum is also the world market leader here (export share 80%). The 50/50 joint venture Rheinfelden Americas LLC with CCL Industries for the production of aluminum slugs existed in Clinton (North Carolina) from late 2014 to early 2020 .
  • Rheinfelden Carbon : Electrodes and special carbon compounds (so-called Söderberg pastes ) for the electrometallurgical industry (aluminum smelting, producers of silicon, iron-aluminum alloys and others). Rheinfelden Carbon produces around 50,000 tons of carbon products per year.
