The Institute for Virus Diagnostics (IVD) is a research facility of the Federal Republic of Germany, which is part of the legally independent higher federal authority Friedrich Loeffler Institute (FLI) on the island of Riems . The FLI also bears the additional designation “Federal Research Institute for Animal Health”. The institute primarily conducts departmental research for the Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection . The research tasks of the IVD are in the field of veterinary medicine and virology .
history
The Institute for Infection Medicine is one of four research facilities on the island of Riems, the history of which goes back to the virologist Friedrich Loeffler (1852–1915) and in 1910. The institute was re-established in its current form in 1992.
- A detailed chronology of the institutes on the island of Riems is shown in the section "History" in the article Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut .
research
In the institute, viral diseases of significant veterinary medicine in farm animals are developed, improved and validated . Particular attention is paid to notifiable animal diseases . The institute also carries out the approval examinations of diagnostic agents required by the Animal Diseases Act.
The Avian Flu, Newcastle Disease and BHV-1 Laboratories are also recognized as reference points by the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE).
In addition to the pestivirus diagnostics, the laboratory performs DNA sequencing as a service for all laboratories of the Friedrich Loeffler Institute on the Insel Riems site. Laboratory diagnostics that are not commercially available are also developed and made available.
Reference laboratories
The National Reference Laboratories (NRL) perform extensive sovereign tasks in the sense of monitoring and improving the diagnosis of notifiable animal diseases , notifiable animal diseases and zoonoses .
The institute has national reference laboratories accredited according to ISO / IEC 17025 for
- African horse sickness (APP)
- African swine fever (ASF)
- Infectious pig paralysis
- Bluetongue Disease (BTV)
- Bovine herpes virus type 1 infection (BHV-1)
- Bovine Virus Diarrhea / Mucosal Disease (BVDV / MD)
- Deer epizootic hemorrhage
- Avian influenza (AIV)
- Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA)
- Classic swine fever (KSP)
- Lumpy skin disease
- Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD)
- Newcastle disease (NDV)
- Pest of the little ruminants
- Sheep and goat smallpox disease
- Rift Valley Fever (RVF)
- Rinderpest
- Swine Vesicular Disease (SVD)
- Vesicular stomatitis (VSV)
Virus bank
The virus bank functions as a central facility with the task of collecting, conserving, maintaining and documenting authentic virus strains that are important for veterinary medicine under defined conditions.
Virus strains with good data and whose origin, identity and freedom from contamination (including mycoplasma and foreign viruses) are known or checked are primarily included in the collection . The virus bank's holdings include more than 500 virus strains and isolates from cattle, pigs, horses, dogs, cats and poultry, but also from goats, sheep, giraffes, African elephants and various fish species.
