Evangelical Church Mark

The Evangelical Church in Märkt , a district of Weil am Rhein in southern Baden , was first mentioned in a document in 1169. The church, formerly consecrated to St. Nicholas , has frescoes from the 15th century that were only uncovered in the 1930s.

history

The first written mention of the church in Märkt 1169 - called "ecclesia Matro" in the Latin original - was made together with the churches in Kirchen and Eimeldingen . A pastor who was also responsible for the village of Inzlingen at that time appeared for the first time in 1275. The current church dates back to a building in the 13th century, which was consecrated to St. Nicholas. The triumphal arch , consisting of different colored stones, points to this time of origin ; the other components could also come from the 14th century.

In the middle of the 18th century the church must have been in a dilapidated condition. The request of the community at the time to extend the church due to lack of space and the statement that the pulpit wobbles due to age is transmitted. However, it is not recorded when the repair work took place.

Repair work in 1934 surprisingly uncovered wall paintings whose existence was unknown until then. The frescoes remained intact during the Second World War . However, an artillery hit damaged the interior of the church, as well as the entire church tower roof and part of the upper floor. In 1946 the building was protected by emergency roofing.

During further renovations in 1959 it was found that the exposed frescoes had several layers of paint.

description

Church building

Church spire with stork's nest

The Märkter Church is in the center and directly on the through road of the village. As is typical for the region, the building consists of a nave covered with a gable roof and an equally covered bell tower . The tower built on the east side has pointed arcades on all four sides and a clock face. It carries a stork's nest on the east end of the roof gable and a small cross on the west side. The lower floors have rectangular slots; the upper floor has a surrounding ledge. The choir, which is also added to the east, extends slightly beyond the east wall and is covered with a pent roof that is flush with the gable of the nave saddle roof.

The main portal of the church is on the west side of the nave. The small door is protected by a flat pent roof.

Interior and equipment

The church of Märkt is a hall church . The hall has a flat wooden ceiling. The altar area is in the choir, which is separated from the hall by a triumphal arch. On the right partition is the pulpit , which can be climbed from the choir. In the choir is a tabernacle of sandstone with plastic depictions of angels from the 15th century.

The wall paintings in the upper part of the choir consist of surrounding representations of the twelve apostles and twelve prophets alternating. A tape serves as a demarcation to the illustrations below. The depiction below, which presumably illustrates the legend of St. Nicholas, is very likely by a different master. The frescoes are dated to the first half of the 15th century, while the cycle below comes from the High Gothic period due to the remains that can be identified . Some of these are also associated with the Basel Dance of Death and attributed to Basel masters. The frescoes were restored by Jürgen Brodwolf .

Bells and organ

The three-part chill cast iron chime was made in 1949 by JF Weule from Bockenem and is tuned to the beats a ', d' 'and f' '.

The organ , built in 1966, comes from GF Steinmeyer & Co. and works with a sliding chest, a mechanical action and includes two manuals , a pedal and nine registers .
