The Steina Dam is from dam , waterworks and reservoirs existing dam in the resin . It is located near the village of Steina in the non-parish Harz region of the Göttingen district in Lower Saxony .

The dam was inaugurated as a retention basin on November 19, 1954 and has served as a drinking water dam since 1958 . Its 8.5 m high dam dams the Steina to the Steinastau basin . It is used to supply the villages of Bad Sachsa , Osterhagen , Nüxei and Steina with drinking water , which is why it is located in a water protection area with the surrounding forests .

Geographical location

The Steinatalsperre is located in the Upper Harz in the Harz Nature Park . It extends about 2.2 km north-northwest of Steina , a district of Bad Sachsa am Ichte -Oberlauf Steina (also known as Steinaer Bach ) - in the Steinatal - and belongs to the catchment area of ​​the Elbe . To the northeast rises as the western branch of the Nesselkopf ( 581.6  m above sea  level ) the Nesseltalskopf (approx.  580  m ), to the southeast as the south-southwest branch of the Nesselkopf the Steintalskopf (approx.  480  m ) and to the west of the Hüttenberg ( 509  m ).

The earthfill dam was built between 1950 and 1954. It is 8 m above the valley floor and 8.5 m above the foundation floor . The crown of the structure is about 377.5  m high, it is about 80 m long, about 4 m at its crown and about 40 m wide at its base. The building volume contains around 15,000 m³ of earth.

Waterworks

The waterworks , which began operating in 1958, is located about 550 m below the dam near the Waldhotel in Steinatal . It is used for drinking water supply of Bad Sachsa , Osterhagen , Nüxei and Steina .

Reservoir

The Steinastau basin extends in north-north-west-south-south-east direction to about 300 m length and is maximally about 60 m wide. It has around 70,000 m³ (70 million  L ) storage space and 75,000 m³ (75 million L) total storage space . Its target is at a height of about 375  m .

Directions and hiking

The Steinatalsperre can be reached from Steina on Steinatalstraße . From the end of this dead end at the Forest Hotel in Steinatal nearby parking Steinatal you about running 550 meters to the dam. From there you can hike to Bad Sachsa , Bad Lauterberg or Ravensberg , for example .

Until 2016, the Steinatalsperre was included as No. 43 in the system of stamping points of the Harz hiking pin. The stamping point is located at the mouth of Nesseltals in the Steinatal few meters southeast and (approx below the dam on a small rest area  375  m ).
